Press Release

Press Release
Date: 6th May 2010

The Naga civil societies expresses our deepest resentment at the unwarranted firing at Mao which has led to three deaths, more than a hundred injured and displacement of more than five hundred traumatized Naga people of surrounding Mao villages.

We question the state government of Manipur if this is the way it protects its citizens. We also question the conduct of the Manipur police and commandos under the command of a high ranking inspector general of police and other officials who have flouted all international norms and conventions of restricting the accessibility of Red Cross to attend to casualties.

We expect the State government of Nagaland to demonstrate more humane understanding and call upon its counterpart to immediately desist from militarizing its own peaceful citizens.

The Naga Hoho is convening an emergency Presidential meeting on the 8th May 2010 towards which the civil society calls upon all the federal units to extend its fullest cooperation at this hour of crisis.

We also place on record our appreciation to the statement of the Joint Working Group of the NSCN/GPRN, GPRN/NSCN, NNC/FGN for their expressed position “that no one should be barred from one’s native land.”
