GUWAHATI/TURA: In a prize catch, Assam Police on Saturday arrested the self-styled chairman of United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) Novembirth Marak from a Guwahati hospital.
The chairman of UALA also known as Chiindik Marak (36) was detained by the special operation unit (SOU) of Assam Police, a senior police official said.
The militant leader was admitted to the hospital on June 10 with the address c/o Salsima D Sangma, Guwahati for some ailment and he was operated upon on June 12.
It was in October last year that Novembirth joined UALA giving strength to the commander-in-chief of UALA Norrok Momin alias Singbirth Marak who formed UALA after breaking away from ANVC-B in February,2013.
As per the state government, the strength of UALA is around 40
In fact before assuming the charge as the self-styled chairman of UALA, Novembirth functioned as the self-styled general secretary of GNLA.
When he was still with GNLA, Novembirth was arrested on May, 2010 from Siliguri railway station in West Bengal along with his girl friend identified as Luxmary Sangma while they were waiting to board a train to Kolkata.
After his arrest, Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA) was slapped on him and he was lodged in jail till he was released in August, 2013 after serving the jail term of three years.
The elusive militant leader had also escaped with injuries in an encounter with the police at Bolchugre area, East Garo Hills in April 2010.
According to police, the arrested militant leader will be handed over to the police in Tura.
