Tangkhul bodies warns of drastic action
UKHRUL, May 19 – The frontal organisations of the Tangkhul community in Ukhrul district have resolved today to take drastic action against the candidates who have defied the directives of the Naga apex body in Manipur by joining the ensuing District Council election process. The Tangkhul organisations including the community’s apex body, the Tangkhul Naga Long, Tangkhul Students’ Union and many others have resolved that the Tangkhuls who are in the fray in the District Council elections will be driven out of their villages and will not be allowed to reside in Naga areas. The properties of these candidates will also be dismantled by the Tangkhul organisations.
Other resolutions of the Tangkhul frontal organisations said that these candidates will be disassociated from the Tangkhul community and would not be allowed to hold community posts and also be barred from taking any public platforms.
The Nagas in Manipur under the aegis of the United Naga Council (UNC) had rejected the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act of 2008 saying that the present does not have the ‘real’ autonomy though the Constitution of India in its clause related to this Act has granted autonomy to all the District Councils. The Naga frontal organisations have been demanding to amend the Act first and then hold the elections. However, the Government of Manipur had gone ahead with the election process and the poll has been slated from May 26. The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has been imposing blockade on the two National Highways since April 11 against the holding of elections to the District Councils under the present status.
