GUWAHATI, Jan 25 – The pro-talk faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has welcomed the Union Government’s decision to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam taking the pre-1971 electoral rolls as parts of the basic documents. This decision will pave the way for taking up the 1951 electoral rolls of the State as parts of the basic documents later on, said the ULFA faction in a statement received here today.

In its statement, singed by its president Mrinal Hazarika, the ULFA faction has also made an appeal to all the indigenous peoples of the State to welcome the said decision of the Union Government and also to extend all co-operations towards its implementation.

The genuine citizens of the country should also keep a vigil on the designs of those who are trying to vitiate the atmosphere by opposing the above decision of the Union Government. These people and their organizations are trying to fan communal passions as their citizenship is doubtful, said the ULFA faction.

It also said that if the situation so demands, the genuine citizens of the country should come out unitedly to resist the designs of such people.

The Government has also been requested by the ULFA faction to take every possible step to make the entire process of updating the NRC comprehensible for the people and also to provide the social organizations the scope to monitor the entire updating process.

It needs mention here that the ULFA faction has been pleading that the illegal migrants staying in the State should be identified with the help of the 1950 NRC and the 1951 electoral rolls.
