Mass movement for integration
Dimapur, April 2 (MExN): Often referred synonymous with generic Naga political aspirations, the long-standing demand for integration of Naga-habited areas could well be in for another thrust. This time, the inspiration is understood to be the separate Telangana state mania that swept across India the previous months.
According to an organization pressing for the integration of Naga areas, Mass Movement for Entire Naga Areas Integration Unity & Solidarity Front, there is being planned consultations with apex Naga organizations to press for the demand. Chairman of the front Puni Ashuli said over phone tonight that the organization is planning to meet with Naga apex organizations such as the Naga Hoho, Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization and the United Naga Council, among others.
He said that the organization has divided itself into 5-zones representing Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh and even Nagas in Myanmar. While a schedule for any specific action to press for integration has yet to be chalked out, certainly, he said, the Naga apex organizations would be met with.
He drew analogy to Telangana state and said integrating the Naga-habited areas would offer ‘good governance’ and ‘vibrant administration.’ But of all, Ashuli said, integration of the Naga areas would mean “50%” of the Nagas’ aspiration would have been fulfilled. He did not elaborate further on this aspect.
A statement of the MMENAIUSF received here also strongly supported the demand for a separate Telangana state from present Andhra Pradesh state. “The people of Telangana region have every right for their separate state formation which would create good governance and smooth administration. Some of the features may determine for the formation of the new state in the region by the parliament according to the constitution of India,” the statement said.
Some of the reasons why the Naga areas should be integrated are linguistic and cultural homogeneity, common historic tradition, common religious background and geographical contiguity. Above all, integration is the wishes of the indigenous people, Ashuli stated.
The MMENAIUSF said that the aspiration of the Telangana people for good governance and smooth administration through ‘transparency and accountability can be achieved by a separate state for the neglected and deprived people of the Talengana region.’
Ashuli said “the same are the issues of the deprived section of the people in the northeastern states, where deprivation and discrimination politically, socially, economically and financially is the headline of the decade to the tribal, especially in the states of Assam, Tripura and Manipur. The Government of India (GOI) shy away to protect and justify the rights of the tribal people in the region, therefore the problem is still alive,” he added.
