ADC election takes hostile turn at Ukhrul

Close on the heels of the 72 hours bandh called by the Tangkhul Co-ordination Committee (TCC) in Ukhrul district against holding of ADC election slated to be held on June 2, 2010, altogether eight houses belonging to the candidates of the up-coming ADC election have been dismantled by unidentified mob at Ukhrul Hqs at around 4.00 pm today. The houses dismantled belong to Peter Ragui, Shanchui Horam, K. Naokahao, RK Star, Pamreiyo, Ningtam all INC candidates and M K Somi, an independent candidate. Most of them have been damaged beyond repair. No casualty has been reported. However, there have been reports of snatching away cash money amounting to Rs. 60,000 belonging to Shanchui Horam. So far, none of them have lodge complaint with the police.
With most of the candidates withdrawing from the fray in compliance to UNC diktat, election will be held in only four (out of the 24 constituencies in the district) of Poi, Shangshak, Shingkap and Kasom Khullen constituencies, while in 20 constituencies, only INC have fielded candidates and apparently may be elected “uncontested”. At the backdrop of the already visible frustration of the local people looming large following Manipur government’s barring the Naga leader, Th. Muivah from visiting his native and the subsequent UNC declaration to excommunicate the candidates in the fray and also with ADC election slated to be held in two day’s time, tension is building up in the district and there is every possibility that the situation may turn hostile anytime.
