Three vehicles were burnt and one vehicle pushed down into a gorge in Tamenglong district headquarters by unidentified persons last night. Of the three vehicles burnt, two were Bolero jeeps (regn Nos. MN-04A- 5795 and MN-03P- 2323) and one was a Safari Dicor while the one that was pushed into the gorge, a Bolero jeep, belonged to the vice chairman of Tamenglong district Autonomous District Council.
Reports said the Safari Dicor belonged to Z Kikhonbou who is an intending candidate from Tamei assembly constituency and the two burnt Bolero jeeps belonged to one Hijam Nilo Singh of Wangkhei Thambalkhong hired by an intending candidate from Tamenglong assembly constituency. Tamenglong Police retrieved the charred vehicles from the spot near Sui Hotel in Tamenglong Bazar and a case has been registered in this connection.
No individuals or organizations have claimed responsibility for incidents. Regarding the Bolero jeep, it belonged to Humaliabou, vice chairman of
Tamenglong ADC. The vehicle bears a registration number MN01X0206. It was said to have forcibly taken from the residence of one ADC member of Tamenglong by unidentified persons and later found in a gorge 200 fts below the IT Road, 2 kms from Tamenglong police station. The vehicle is said to have damaged very badly.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations of Tamenglong district convened a press conference today evening at Zeliangrong House where they vehemently condemned the incidents where 3 vehicles were torched by unknown miscreants in Tamenglong town. Representatives of Zeliangrong Union, Zeliangrong Students Union (ZSU), Zeliangrong Women Union (ZWUM), ZYF and ZEFPB speaking in the conference also
condemned the ineffectiveness of the security personnel present in the town. Security personnel of 5th Manipur Rifles are posted at UBI.
The civil organisations asked all concerned to speed up required enquiries and take up necessary action against the culprits.
